Choosing the right floor surfaces for your new home can seem like a daunting task. Not only will you need to choose the most aesthetically pleasing floor surfaces, but you’ll also have to keep its overall practicality in mind too. At the end of the day, these are surfaces that you and your family will walk, stand and sit on for a long time to come, and you’ll want to make sure it’s as comfortable and practical as possible. Here are three tips you can use when deciding on the flooring for your new home. You can also get some advice from professional builders like Coral Homes, who specialise in house and land packages.

When choosing the floor surface for your kitchen, remember that your main concern here should be durability and ease of cleaning. Use linoleum, ceramic tile, or wood for your flooring. They all offer superior durability, are easy to clean, and come in a wide range of aesthetically pleasing designs and colours. Linoleum is the least expensive of the three, while ceramic tiles are definitely the most popular. But don’t discount wood. Hard wood is a great choice for your kitchen flooring. It can withstand a high traffic volume, is easy to clean, and can add a touch of homeliness to your home.

With bathrooms, you need to choose a floor surface that’s able to withstand moisture. Linoleum and ceramic tile – along with being great choices for your kitchen – are also ideal for your bathroom, as are surfaces made from limestone, marble and granite. Obviously, these different surfaces all come with varying price tags. Choose linoleum if affordability is your top priority.

What to Use for Your Living Areascanstockphoto7256622

Your living room will undoubtedly see lots of foot traffic. That’s why it’s important that you choose a surface that’s durable, easy to clean, and – last but not least – adds a nice touch to your overall aesthetic design. Wood is a popular floor surface option for a living room. It comes in a wide variety of patterns and colours, and is a breeze to clean. It’s also very strong and can stand the test of time. However, it can be cold to walk on during the winter so, if you live in an area that sees particularly harsh winters, you may opt instead to lay carpet along your living room floor. Again, carpet comes in a wide range of colours and patterns and, in contrast to wooden floors, you won’t look to avoid walking on it barefoot on those cold mornings. Just keep in mind that carpet stains easily and, if you have kids, you may want to think about how you’ll remove that inevitable stain.

It’s important that you get your flooring right from the beginning. Not only will it cost you more to replace a floor surface further on down the line, but it will also be a massive inconvenience for those that have to live through the renovation. My Goodness, the floors in the photos are gleaming! We chose our floors based on the presence of kids, cats and a dog and a need for durability. I just wish they would gleam, too!

  6. Always important to make the right choice for the room, but also for the usage. Thank you for pointing that out. The other thing to keep in mind about Hardwood is to choose the type that fits your world; i.e. if you have pets or kids, get some super-hard flooring which is not as prone to scratches and dents. But that tends to be on the higher end of the cost scale.

  7. When looking at flooring, what always come to mind for me is maintenance! As in, what is best to clean certain types of flooring. Everybody has there way/opinion of cleaning a floor, but what is really the best way to keep floors looking great without compromising the longevity

Mop and bucket is not always the answer.
