Master Bedroom Makeover with ben & ME #DIYwithBen

1 Flares 1 Flares ×

Do you know what happens when both of your kids head off to school?  Time.  Time is what happens.  That is the gift I was given this past week. 35 hours a week my children are in school and I no longer have to spend my days chasing after (read picking up after) two boys.  Instead, the housework I do stays done.  Well, at least until 3pm.  To celebrate this life changing event, my husband and I decided it was time to create our own bedroom sanctuary.

Since I am a bit on the frugal side, I planned out our bedroom makeover around things we already have.  I love my bed clothes and window coverings already, so the paint we picked out went well with them.  Our paint?  A very light grey from Benjamin Moore.

This fall, Benjamin Moore has a fantastic deal going.  It’s called ben & ME.  You get just about everything you need to ben&ME Baggive any room a facelift for $109*.  So what’s in this kit you ask?

  • 2 gallons of premium paint with 1 quart for trim
  • Sleeve roller, paintbrush, paint tray, drop cloth, paint can opener and green painters tape
  • How-To Guide and playlist to keep you moving’!

The ben & ME bag is a steal!  Valued at $169 if you by it all separately!  But it’s only available until October 5th, so be sure to visit your local Benjamin Moore Signature Store or look for a participating dealer on the Benjamin Moore Website.

Here is a pic of what my room looked like before.  It wasn’t bad…but that wall color is the same throughout my whole house and well…it got boring.  I knew I wanted to go grey.

Bedroom Before

So we (well, hubby) got to work.  Using the green painters tape, he taped off all of the beautiful trim in our room.  We live in a house that is almost a century old, and one of my favorite features is the crown molding and baseboards.  Now, since half of our bedroom is an addition, the walls do not have the crown molding that the rest of the house does, but they were able to make a pretty close match to the baseboards.

Thanks to the very helpful How-To guide provided in the ben and ME kit, we learned some very helpful tricks when it comes to making painting a room an easy chore.  I only wish that I had a rubber band on hand…(who doesn’t have a rubber band??)  Apparently this girl.  Because this is what my can looks like now.  With a rubber band it would have stayed nice and clean.  Remember – Rubber band to defeat the drips!

And when it comes to splatter…and yes, there will always be a little bit of splatter, just be sure to keep a wet rag on hand to wipe those drips up off your trim or floor as you go.  Trust me…it’s far easier than trying to scrape those perfect little circles off your hard wood floor without leaving a mark.

My best tip…is stay out-of-the-way.  Though Benjamin Moore calls it Mind Your Manners.  Painting a room, a house, a picture…well it can take a lot of work.  And when you’re working with more than one person…say your husband or wife…well, it can get tough.  Each of us have our own right way of doing things.  No matter what…the end goal is a beautiful room, and if we remember to play nice, the fruits of our labour will be much sweeter.  And if you happen to have some making up to do…well, cookies always work!

So here is what our room looks like now.  The two night stands are on my ‘need to refinish’ list!  I plan to paint them a very, very dark brown to match the headboard…or at least come close to it.  And as for my bedding…yes, I do still love it.  But I think I may keep my eyes peeled for a monochromatic pattern, I think it would look sharp in my new room.

You’ll notice on the right there is an apple barrel with wool and needles…Yes folks, I love to knit.  And with our new styling bedroom came my very own knitting corner.  Though I am still looking for the perfect, comfy chair, the one there will work for now.  I look forward to curling up this winter in front of my favorite TV show, with needles in hand.

Please excuse the lack-of-proper-curtain-rod.  I haven’t found one I love yet!

So now my room is all painted…and I am truly in love with it.  I escape to my knitting corner each evening with my cuppa tea and kick my feet up.  Pretty things make me happy.  Now…I just need to keep the kids out!
