I have been a fan of Butterball for many years, though, I’ll admit, it’s most often used around the holidays. But Butterball isn’t just for the holidays anymore! They carry so many fabulous turkey products! From turkey bacon to cold cuts, even stuffed turkey breast!
See, o’ur family loves to experiment with foods – we like to change things up, repurpose an ingredient that would usually be used one way, flip it around, get all unconventional and use it in a way that is unheard of. So when I was asked to come up with a summer recipe using a product from Butterball I did a little research, checked out their Pinterest Boards, and put our thinking caps on. It didn’t take long for us to come up with Spicy Turkey Burger Egg Rolls.
Egg rolls are one of my favorite snacks – I absolutly love them…and growing up in a Chinese restaurant I learned pretty early on how to make them…but here’s the thing – you can put ANYTHING in an egg roll! So as we have recently partnered with Butterball to create some fun summer recipes, I thought, hey, why not! And I handed a package of Butterball Turkey Burgers and some wonton wraps to my hubby and sent him on his way to make some mini egg rolls. I knew teaching him how to make egg rolls would come in handy.
And here is what he came up with:
I have to say…he did a fantastic job. They were delicious. I wasn’t home when they were made, and though he made a ton of them, there were only four left when I got home….four. Now he is going to have to make more because, well…I want more. I think that’s a good reason! Keep on reading because below is his method and recipe for this fantastic appetizer (or snack!)
What I really love about this recipe is you can add anything! And I mean anything! Throw some veggies in there, shredded cabbage and carrots work really well. Want them really spicy, throw some of your favorite hot sauce in there! They make a fantastic appetizer for your next patio party your planning, and they even travel well. Planning a day at the beach? These babies are even yummy cold! (As long as you keep them out of the danger zone – Under 40 degrees F or over 140 degrees F) So pack them right next to the ice packs.
Spicy Turkey Egg Roll Recipe featuring Butterball Turkey Burgers
- 3 Turkey Burger Paddies – thawed and crumbled.
- 1 Small onion – chopped
- 1/2 tsp Fresh Ground Black Pepper
- 1/2 tsp Cayanne Pepper
- 1/4 tsp Ginger
- 1 tsp Poultry Seasoning
- Flaked Chili Peppers (to taste – optional)
- 1 Tbsp Corn startch
- 1/4 Water
- 1 pkg Wonton Wraps
Mix the first seven ingredients together in a medium bowl until well blended. Cook in a non-stick frying pan covered over medium heat, until turkey is thouroughly cooked. Stir often to keep mixture crumbly. Add cornstartch and water and turn the heat off, it will thicken quickly.
Let mixture cool enough so you can handle it.
Putting together your mini eggrolls.
Do the following steps for each individual egg roll. When you’ve done this enough times, you can do 3 or 4 at once.
Step 1. Open your Wonton wraps and divide in half. Cover one half so they don’t dry out. You can use a damp cloth or just saran wrap.
Step 2. Wet your finger with luke warm water, or you can use a small pastry brush.
Step 3. Wet the edges of 3 sides of the wonton wrap, leaving the fourth side dry.
Step 4. Place about a table spoon of the prepared mixture in the middle of the wonton wrap.
Step 5. Starting with the dry edge, pull up the wonton wrap and cover the filling. Pull back the wrap so that you are holding both the wonton wrap and the filling, but can still see opposite wet end.
Step 6. Roll into a tube.
Step 7. Push down the two open sides of the egg roll so that they are sealed. Use some pressure, so they don’t open while being deep fried. (I usually use the palm of my hand and the coutertop)
Continue the above steps until you run out of filling or wonton wraps.
(Left over wonton wraps can be frozen, just wrap them well)
Deep fry your wontons for 1 – 2 minutes. And keep watch on them at all times, since your filling is already cooked you’re just making the outside crispy.
Add your favorite egg roll dip or sauce and your ready to go! My favorite is curry!
*Did you know that most restaurant made plum sauce is made from pumpkin mix…not plums?
*Did you know that many Chinese restaurants make chicken balls out of Turkey breast?
